2015 Punkin Chunkin Events

Postby madmattd » Sun Jul 12, 2015 5:53 pm

I'm pooling a list here of the various chunks that are going on in 2015 so everyone is aware. There are a lot of smaller ones popping up across the country, which is terrific! Especially since the WCPC was cancelled last year, and is looking like it will not be a distance event this year due to a ridiculously too small field (2000'-2500' maximum distance). If you hear of more that aren't here (I know there are more I am forgetting), post as much info as you can and I will add it to the list.

Edit 8-22-15: Added website for NH chunk. Edited WCPC information. Edited Route 66 info. Added Washington state events to this listing so there is a chronological (date-ordered) list.
Edit 9-7-15: Added Ohio Chunk
Edit 9-15-15: Added Last Fling Pumpkin Sling
Edit 10-8-15: Added Howard County, Tucson chunks. Crossed off WCPC since it was cancelled again.
Edit2 10-8-15: Added CO Chunk, Great Pumpkin Fest, Clay County
Edit 10-9-15: Added Cal-Fullerton event
Edit 10-13-15: Added SlingFest
Edit 11-1-15: Updated new SlingFest date.

September 12-13: Snohomish Pumpkin Hurl
Website: http://www.festivalofpumpkins.org/#!pumpkin-hurl/c13ud
Location: Snohomish, WA
Complete with Medieval Faire. Fling what you bring on Sunday. We need more entries! Two out of four were me last year.

September 26: Burlington Pumpkin Pitch
Website: http://burlington-chamber.com/harvest-festival/
Location: Burlington, WA
The Northwest's premier event.

October 11-12: Last Fling Pumpkin Sling
Website: http://www.pumpkinsling.com/index.html
Location: Pocono Raceway, PA
Lots of divisions on this one, it will be easiest to visit their website and check out the rules for yourself. They are also certified for 2015 to record distance shots for the WCPCA for teams attending that event. I believe I saw on their site that there is a 2600' range.

October 11-12: Punkin Chunkin Colorado
Website: https://www.facebook.com/inertia2
Location: Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, Aurora, CO
This event has been on-going for several years now. Inertia II (the big sling-armed centrifugal) helps organize this event. This year, Colossal Thunder will be joining, as well as a few other teams from the area. I don't have a specific event link, but go through Team Inertia's Facebook page to get more info.

October 16: Ohio Chunk
Website:
Location: Dayton, OH
This is an unlimited distance for-charity chunk held near the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This is not their first year, but typically it has been mostly just the Ohio teams that have attended, until this year. Many WCPCA teams will be there this year, including American Chucker (the treb), Ethos, Chunkworks, Masters of Mayhem (possibly with their new treb Krakken?), and many others. I'm hearing upwards of 20 teams for 2015 will be there. For more info, contact American Chucker or one of the other teams. There is no website that I am aware of. And yes, it is on a Friday.

October 17: Route 66 Punkin Chunkin
Website: https://www.facebook.com/rt66punkinchunkin?fref=nf
https://vinitaareachamberofcommerce.wildapricot.org/event-2003578
Location: Vinita, OK
This is supposed to be an unlimited distance event with a target element too. More details are on their page, sign up at the second website link. Colossal Thunder, the youth trebuchet that cleared 2500' at the 2013 WCPC, will be there, and I believe Cory is helping organize the event (he and Colossal Thunder will at the very least be there!). See picture of the field in the post below from hwinesburg.

October 17: Howard County Fall Fest
Website: https://www.facebook.com/HowardFireCompanyFallPunkinChunkinFestival
Location: Bald Eagle State Park, Howard, PA
This is less of a competition, more of a free-for-all chunk, where teams launch into a lake. There have usually been at least a few WCPC teams in attendance. Sorry, no other link than the Facebook one that I've found. If you are a team looking to compete there, I can put you in touch with the organizer.

October 17-18: Clay County Punkin Chunkin
Website: http://www.ncmtnchamber.com/punkin-chunkin
Location: Hayesville, NC
Carolina Chunkin! A few WCPC teams will be in attendance (at a minimum First in Fright and Onager), likely just "shooting for fun" like last year, but who knows.

October 18: Tucson Pumpkin Toss
Website: http://www.tucsonpumpkintoss.org/
Location: Tucson, AZ
The Tucson Pumpkin Toss, now in their 5th year of existence. A combo distance/accuracy competition limited to 100m (that's 328 feet) range. Machine size is restricted, but still allowed to be a pretty good size.

October 24: Morton Punkin Chunkin
Website: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Morton-Punkin-Chuckin/281350455222205
http://mortonmagnet.com/punkin_chuckin.php - this site will be updated soon with the 2015 info I am told.
Location: Morton, IL
This is a distance event with a 4000-foot range. Remember the ACME Catapult guys (the US ones)? Well, this is out in their neck of the woods.

October 24-25: New Hampshire Chunk
Location: New Hampshire Motor Speedway (Concord, NH)
http://www.extremechunkin.com/
This is an unlimited distance event. I assume Yankee Siege II, Launch-Ness Monster, Chunk Norris (the catapult), Tired Iron, and American Chunker (air cannon) will all be there as this is in their backyard. Perhaps some others too.

October 24 & 25: Great Pumpkin Fest
Website: http://bit.ly/GPCFFacebook
Location:Racine Country Fairgrounds, Union Grove, WI
The Great Pumpkin Fest is a community event celebrating the fall season with a focus on youth and the development of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills in local schools. The event highlights a Pumpkin Chuckin competition where teams will build either a catapult, trebuchet or slingshot to launch an 8 to 10 lb. pumpkin for distance, accuracy, and creativity.

November 7: Cal-State Fullerton Pumpkin Chunk
Website: http://www.discoverycube.org/oc/exhibits/pumpkin-launch/
Location:California State University, Fullerton, CA
"Bring your lawn chairs and witness history at this free event as teams compete to see who can launch a pumpkin at targets using giant trebuchets and other devices. Plus, kids can participate in hands-on activities throughout the day. Don’t miss this great family event!"

November 7-8: World Championship of Punkin Chunkin
Website: https://punkinchunkin.com/
Location: Dover International Speedway (Dover, DE)
This event will NOT be a distance event for 2015. The field is simply way too small, distances of much over 2000' are not realistic, and shooting out of the field boundaries is not permitted (likely due to no agreement with neighboring landowners). The event is likely to be a "call your distance" competition, where you declare how far you will shoot, shoot, then get scored based on how far from that distance you actually throw.

November 15th: SlingFest
Website: http://dfwtrebuchet.com
Location: Plano, TX
The DFW Trebuchet Society and TheLab.ms (a Plano-area maker space) are excited to present the 5th Annual SlingFest on Sunday October 25th beginning at 11:00 AM at Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve in Plano, TX.

Thanks Bob and Corey(?). I will add your info to the list (so there is a chronological listing) in a minute here.

I recently received the website address for the NH chunk, and the WCPC event is getting more defined (good thing too since it's only 2.5 months away). That information is updated above.

Snohomish and Burlington: I was going to send in entry forms today but can't find one for either event on line. Anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

Bob

Edit to add: I've sent an email to both organizers.

The Pumpkin Launch at Cal State Fullerton is scheduled for November 7. No web page yet.

We've added some distance improvements to our treb but accuracy is our real bugaboo. What we really need is luck. I'm growing pumkins again this year, but the results are somewhat disappointing, with size/weight being more variable than expected. Hope to have enough of the right size to last through the event.

I just came across posts for the Last Fling Pumpkin Sling at the Pocono Raceway. Details have been added to the original post in this thread. I also added details about an unlimited distance event in Ohio near the Wright-Patterson Air Force base where a lot of WCPCA teams will be in attendance (not us thanks to scheduling conflicts).

Burlington coming up in less than a week now. I've switched my entry from the failed onager to the old reliable JR in the lite division, so I hope to have a good comptetion with RtB and Ballistikraft. Sounds like we may have four decent sized machines if 4H and Christi can get their communications sorted out.

Hello,

Please add us to the list!

The 11th annual Wright Patterson AFB Pumpkin Chuck is on the 16th of October at the runway adjacent to the National Museum of the US Air Force. It is on a Friday to attract all the workers at the AF Base down for a lunchtime event. We have over 4000 feet in our current configuration (up to 7500 feet on the runway). The website is http://www.miamivalleycfc.org/_root/ind ... nt_id=5127. Team ETHOS, American Chuckers, ChunkWorks, Masters of Mayhem, and Chunka from Down Unda will all be there. They will be joined by a number of smaller machines, a crowd pleasing human powered machine, pie eating and pie baking contests and some of the best food trucks in the area. It is a great time!
